CRONOLOGIA

1939	Born in Lancashire, England.
1956-60	Studies at Wigan School of Art. Intermediate Prize. Awarded National Diploma in Design (Painting Special). Governors’ medal for best student in all departments of Technical College. Prosser-White Travelling Scholarship to Paris.
1960-63	Edinburgh College of Art
1961	Easter Travelling Scholarship. Sketch Club Prize.
1962	College Diploma in Painting. Wins Post-Graduate Scholarship.
1963	Easter Travelling Scholarship to Madrid to study Bosch.
1963-64	Lives and paints in Spain on an Andrew Grant Scholarship. On return, exhibition of paintings at Edinburgh College of Art.
1964	Travelling and painting in Norway.
1964-65	Part-time lecturer, Wigan School of Art.
1965-66	University of London, Goldsmith’s College. Degree in Art Education
1966	Works with Educational Television Research Unit, London University.
1966-68	Assistant Lecturer, Wigan School of Art.
1969	Painting and Studying in Italy. Spends six months painting in Sicily and three months in Tuscany.
1970	Lecturer, High Wycombe College of Technology and Art.
1971	Sponsored by American film producer, spends a year painting in Sicily.. Builds studio at Militello Rosmarino.
1972-4	Senior Lecturer in Fine Art, Manchester Polytechnic.
1973	Elected member of Manchester Academy of Fine Arts.
1974-77	Painting in Sicily. Runs a private school of painting. 1978-79
1978-79	Designs and produces television programmes for children in hospital, Manchester.
1979-90	Painting in Sicily on a full-time basis. Has continued ever since as full-time painter.
1981	Documentary film on his life and work in Sicily entitled ‘Il Nostro John Picking’ produced by Lancastria Television for British Television Channel Four.
1981	Receives Honorary Citizenship of Militello Rosmarino (Sicily).
1990	Sets up second studio at Clusane, on the lake Iseo (Brescia) Italy. Divides time painting between Sicily and Brescia.
1993	Moves second studio to Via Sant’Afra, Corte Franca near Lake Iseo.
1998	First visit to New York.
2000	Paint in studio in W 15^th Street New York. Exhibits with Monique Goldstrom Gallery, Broadway.
